Mom’s blue dress was what I wore the night Dad looked at my face and took Lily to a banquet instead. On my 38th birthday, he arrived at the door with a box of things hidden from me. Before I opened it, his words took me back to that dress and made me wonder which of us he’d really kept out of sight.
Dad pushed the box toward me with both trembling hands.

“No. You don’t get to turn this into one of your mysterious father lessons.”
“It’s not a lesson.” He pushed himself carefully upright. “It’s where I first failed you.”

“When I was little, I’d ask why you weren’t coming. He’d say you hated those events.”
