Rain dripped from the edges of black umbrellas as she unfolded the soaked marriage certificate with trembling fingers.<\/p>\n

And under the groom\u2019s name was the same name engraved on the coffin.<\/p>\n

The dead man.<\/p>\n

The old woman looked from the paper\u2026 to the casket\u2026 to the bride kneeling in the mud.<\/p>\n

Then she whispered, \u201cThat\u2019s my son.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bride\u2019s face crumpled.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know,\u201d she said. \u201cHe came to me last night bleeding and terrified. He said if anything happened to him before sunrise, I had to come here and stop the burial.\u201d<\/p>\n

A wave of panic moved through the mourners.<\/p>\n

Because if she was telling the truth, then who was in the coffin?<\/p>\n

The man in the dark suit had already vanished into the fog.<\/p>\n

The bride wiped rain from her mouth and forced herself to keep speaking.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said someone in the family was burying proof,\u201d she whispered. \u201cHe said the body was not his. He said if they got it underground, no one would ever know who they really killed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The old woman stumbled back.<\/p>\n

Her son had been missing for two days. The suit, the watch, the ring\u2014those were the things they used to identify him. The coffin had remained closed because of \u201csevere trauma.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now even the excuses sounded rehearsed.<\/p>\n

Then the bride reached inside her soaked sleeve and pulled out one more thing.<\/p>\n

A key.<\/p>\n

Small. Brass. Stained with dried blood.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe told me this opens the boathouse behind your estate,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd that if your brother runs, it means he knows what\u2019s inside.\u201d<\/p>\n

The old woman went cold.<\/p>\n

Because the man who had just fled through the graveyard was not a stranger.<\/p>\n

He was her younger son.<\/p>\n

The dead man\u2019s brother.<\/p>\n

At that exact moment, one of the pallbearers shouted from beside the lowering device.<\/p>\n

The coffin latch was moving.<\/p>\n

Everyone turned.<\/p>\n
