She just stared at the badge in her daughter\u2019s tiny hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe man from your school?\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

The girl nodded, eyes huge with fear.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe smiled at me,\u201d she said softly. \u201cHe told my teacher he was your friend.\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman\u2019s stomach turned.<\/p>\n

Captain Reyes had never met her.<\/p>\n

Which meant he had been near her daughter before tonight. Watching. Planning.<\/p>\n

A flashlight beam slid across the car above their heads, and both of them froze again.<\/p>\n

Footsteps crunched closer.<\/p>\n

Then a new voice shouted from somewhere beyond the rows of wrecked cars:<\/p>\n

\u201cWait! Stop searching this section!\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman peered through the cracked window of the ruined car and saw a younger officer pushing past the others.<\/p>\n

Not panicked.<\/p>\n

Focused.<\/p>\n

Desperate.<\/p>\n

It was Officer Nolan \u2014 the only cop in the precinct who had looked unsettled when the fake kidnapping alert was issued.<\/p>\n

Captain Reyes stormed toward him. \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n

Nolan\u2019s jaw tightened. \u201cThe girl\u2019s backpack was found at the school yesterday. This didn\u2019t start tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reyes went still.<\/p>\n

The woman stopped breathing.<\/p>\n

Nolan raised his voice so the others could hear.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I pulled the traffic cam footage you ordered deleted.\u201d<\/p>\n

Every officer in the lot turned toward him.<\/p>\n

Reyes stepped forward slowly. \u201cYou don\u2019t know what you\u2019re saying.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Nolan was already holding up his phone.<\/p>\n

On the screen was a paused frame from a security camera.<\/p>\n

The woman.
\nHer daughter.
\nAnd Captain Reyes standing outside the school two days earlier.<\/p>\n

The little girl saw it too and began shaking violently.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s him,\u201d she whispered. \u201cThat\u2019s the man who said if Mommy ever told anyone, we\u2019d have to go away forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

The entire impound lot went silent.<\/p>\n

Reyes\u2019s hand moved toward his holster.<\/p>\n

Nolan drew first.<\/p>\n

The woman pulled her daughter lower behind the car, heart pounding so hard it hurt.<\/p>\n

Then Reyes looked directly toward their hiding place.<\/p>\n

And smiled.<\/p>\n
