ragged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you get it?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>The boy looked at the girl first.<\/p>\n<p>Then answered:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cAt the old shelter near the highway. A woman brought me there once when I was sick. She had a cut on her arm and was crying. She said if she didn\u2019t come back, I had to find the man with the green jacket and the girl in yellow.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The father went pale.<\/p>\n<p>Because that was impossible.<\/p>\n<p>The accident was supposed to have killed his wife instantly.<\/p>\n<p>That was what the police said.<br \/>\nWhat the report said.<br \/>\nWhat everyone accepted.<\/p>\n<p>But now a homeless boy was standing in front of him carrying proof she had lived long enough to leave a message.<\/p>\n<p>The girl in the wheelchair was trembling openly now.<\/p>\n<p>The father dropped to one knee beside her and reached under the seat with shaking hands.<\/p>\n<p>His fingers found something taped beneath the frame.<\/p>\n<p>A small waterproof envelope.<\/p>\n<p>He stared at it like it might explode.<\/p>\n<p>Then slowly peeled it free.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a folded note.<\/p>\n<p>And a thin key.<\/p>\n<p>He opened the note first.<\/p>\n<p>The handwriting was hers.<\/p>\n<p>No mistake.<\/p>\n<p>His wife\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>His daughter covered her mouth with both hands.<\/p>\n<p>The father read the first line and nearly stopped breathing:<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you are reading this, the crash was not an accident.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The boy stepped back half a step, as if even he had never known how heavy the truth would feel once it was opened.<\/p>\n<p>The father kept reading.<\/p>\n<p><strong>She can walk.
