hands were still trembling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother kept it hidden all her life,\u201d she whispered. \u201cShe said if she died before telling me the truth, I had to find the man from the restaurant with the gold piano and show him this picture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The elderly pianist slowly stood from his bench, his eyes locked on the photo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember that night,\u201d he said. \u201cYour first wife came here with the baby. She was terrified. She said someone close to the family wanted the child gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A horrified murmur spread across the room.<\/p>\n<p>The husband looked like he couldn\u2019t breathe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat can\u2019t be true,\u201d the wife snapped. \u201cShe\u2019s lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the pianist took one step closer and pointed at the photo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was something sewn into that blanket,\u201d he said. \u201cA name hidden under the fold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The husband unfolded the corner of the picture with shaking fingers.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>A single stitched letter in blue thread.<\/p>\n<p><strong>E.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>His first wife had wanted to name their daughter Elara.<\/p>\n<p>No one else knew that.<\/p>\n<p>The husband\u2019s knees nearly gave out.<\/p>\n<p>The waitress was crying openly now. \u201cMy mother told me she took me because she thought she was saving me,\u201d she said. \u201cBut before she died\u2026 she said I was never hers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The whole room fell silent again.<\/p>\n<p>Then the pianist looked toward the rich wife.<\/p>\n<p>His face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also remember,\u201d he said slowly, \u201cthat your current wife was in the hallway that night\u2026 arguing with your first wife right before she disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The wife\u2019s face went white.<\/p>\n<p>The husband turned toward her in disbelief.<\/p>\n<p>She opened her mouth, but nothing came out.<\/p>\n<p>Then the waitress took a tiny step forward, tears running down her face, and said the words that made the entire restaurant stop breathing:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t steal you from my mother\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe stole me from yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cNo,\u201d she said too quickly. \u201cThat\u2019s impossible.\u201d But nobody in the restaurant was looking at her anymore.
