That’s the closest we came.”

Rachel’s expression changed.

She looked embarrassed.

“I’m sorry.”

“You didn’t know.”

“I should have asked.”

“You weren’t married to him.”

The words came out more sharply than I intended.

Rachel nodded.

“You’re right.”

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she sat down.

“My father was sick in Dallas,” she said. “I was having a terrible time. Marcus contacted me. He knew I was vulnerable.”

I listened.

“He told me he understood me. He said he had never stopped caring about me.”

I felt something twist inside my chest.

“Then what?”

“He started commenting on my pictures. Sending messages. Asking for photographs.”

“Photographs like the ones he asked for last night?”

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.”

I looked toward the photographer.

She was pretending to be busy with a light stand.

I suspected she was listening to every word.

“Did you send them?”

Rachel took a breath.

“At first.”

That hurt.

Not because Rachel had betrayed me.

Because I suddenly understood how easy it had been for Marcus to build a separate little world outside our marriage.

“But then I stopped.”

“Why?”

“Because it became uncomfortable.”

She pulled out her phone.

“I told him to stop.”

She handed it to me.

I hesitated before taking it.

The messages were there.

Marcus telling her she looked incredible.

Marcus saying he dreamed about her.

Marcus asking for photographs.

Marcus complaining about me.

I read slowly.

He had called me insecure.

Controlling.

Unambitious.

He had told Rachel that I didn’t dress up anymore.

That I had changed.

That he felt trapped.

My throat tightened.

All those years, I had believed the problem was that I wasn’t giving enough.

Meanwhile, he had been telling another woman that I was the reason he felt unhappy.

Rachel watched me read.

“I didn’t believe everything he said.”

“Did you believe any of it?”

She looked uncomfortable.

“Some things.”

I handed the phone back.

“I suppose I did change.”

Rachel looked at me.

“How?”

“I got tired.”

She didn’t interrupt.

“I stopped buying clothes I liked because Marcus would ask why I was dressing up. I stopped making plans with friends because he complained about coming home to an empty house. I stopped going out because he always asked who would be there.”

Rachel’s face tightened.

“He told me you were controlling him.”

I gave her a tired smile.

“He was controlling me.”

Neither of us spoke.

That was the first moment I realized Rachel wasn’t standing across from me as the other woman.

She was standing beside me as another person who had been given a carefully edited version of Marcus.

She looked down at her phone.

“When I saw your first photograph yesterday, I understood something.”

“What?”

“He immediately texted me.”

I looked up.

“What did he say?”

Rachel showed me.

Delete that.

Then:

She is trying to copy you.

My stomach turned.

Rachel continued.

“He was angry.”

“At me?”

“At you.”

“Why?”

“He said you were trying to embarrass him.”

I laughed softly.

“He was embarrassed by a picture of his own wife.”

Rachel nodded.

“That’s why I messaged you.”

I looked at her.

“I thought you wanted to humiliate me.”

“No.”

Her answer was immediate.

“I wanted you to know.”

“Why?”

Rachel swallowed.

“Because he did something similar when we broke up.”

I waited.

“He made me feel like I was difficult. Like I wasn’t enough. Then he would come back whenever he wanted attention.”

She shook her head.

“I finally understood that Marcus doesn’t miss women.”

“What does he miss?”

She looked directly at me.

“Being admired.”

The sentence settled between us.

I thought about his comment.

Beautiful.

One word.

But suddenly it wasn’t about Rachel’s appearance.

It was about Marcus needing someone to respond to him.

A reaction.

A mirror.

A woman who made him feel desirable.

And when the woman closest to him stopped reflecting the image he wanted, he looked somewhere else.

The photographer approached.

“Are you two ready?”

Rachel looked at me.

I looked at her.

“Together?” I asked.

The photographer shrugged.

“Why not?”

We didn’t pose as friends.

We weren’t friends.

We weren’t rivals either.

We were simply two women who had been told different versions of the same story.

The first photograph was taken near the industrial window.

We stood several feet apart.

Rachel looked outside.

I looked straight at the camera.

The second photograph had both of us sitting on the floor, our shoes beside us.

Somewhere between the third and fourth shots, Rachel laughed.

I laughed too.

Neither of us could explain why.

Perhaps because the absurdity of the situation finally became too large to carry seriously.

The photographer smiled.

“There.”

She raised the camera.

“That’s the one.”

I looked at the preview.

We weren’t smiling beautifully.

We were laughing like women who had survived something ridiculous.

The next photographs were quieter.

We stood shoulder to shoulder.

Then back to back.

Then facing the camera.

At one point, the photographer lowered the camera.

“This isn’t revenge.”

I nodded.

“No.”

“What is it?”

I looked at Rachel.

“Evidence.”

She smiled.

“That works.”

When the session ended, I selected one photograph.

Rachel and I were standing side by side, looking directly into the lens.

I posted it.

The caption was simple.

Sometimes two women aren’t enemies.
