Nothing like before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you managing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBarely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you\u2019re paying your obligations?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>He stared at his hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been thinking about something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI used to tell myself I borrowed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t borrow it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The distinction mattered.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t speak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kept calling it borrowing because that made me feel like I wasn\u2019t doing something wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew every time I moved money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I let him continue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew you trusted me with the accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew you were exhausted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I knew you wouldn\u2019t immediately suspect me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The honesty was painful.<\/p>\n<p>But it was also the first time he had described what he had done without hiding behind pressure, mistakes, or circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>He took a long breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I wanted the life you built.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou already had a life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot the one I wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStatus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted people to look at me and think I was successful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were successful. I was standing next to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought if I controlled Aura, people would finally see me as the person who made everything possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Theresa?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe believed it too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou used her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou used Claire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes closed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou used me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was nothing left to argue.<\/p>\n<p>He had finally said it.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI needed you to say that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I would stop wondering whether I had misunderstood happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark was in an accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs he okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019ll recover.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you need time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer felt important.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t need to abandon my life whenever the past appeared.<\/p>\n<p>I could acknowledge what happened and keep moving.<\/p>\n<p>The next few weeks were quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Mark recovered.<\/p>\n<p>His attorney confirmed that his repayment obligations remained unchanged.<\/p>\n<p>Theresa did not contact me.<\/p>\n<p>Claire did not return.<\/p>\n<p>Life settled again.<\/p>\n<p>Then one afternoon, a letter arrived.<\/p>\n<p>It was from Mark.<\/p>\n<p>I almost threw it away.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t ask me to come back.<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t ask for forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>He simply wrote that he had finally understood the difference between being loved and being entitled.<\/p>\n<p>He wrote that he had spent years assuming my loyalty was permanent because I had tolerated so much.<\/p>\n<p>He admitted that my tolerance had taught him the wrong lesson.<\/p>\n<p>He ended with one sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope one day the memory of me becomes ordinary for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I folded the letter.<\/p>\n<p>That was exactly what I wanted.<\/p>\n<p>Not revenge.<\/p>\n<p>Not reconciliation.<\/p>\n<p>Ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>A memory that no longer had the power to disturb my day.<\/p>\n<p>I placed the letter beside my grandmother\u2019s note.<\/p>\n<p>Two pieces of paper.<\/p>\n<p>Two different messages.<\/p>\n<p>One had reminded me to protect what I built.<\/p>\n<p>The other reminded me that sometimes letting go was part of that protection.<\/p>\n<p>That evening, I closed Aura at nine.<\/p>\n<p>The staff had already left.<\/p>\n<p>David was counting receipts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He handed me the numbers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe beat last year\u2019s same-day revenue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s lights low.<\/p>\n<p>The restaurant felt peaceful.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Theresa\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Mark\u2019s lies.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the bill.<\/p>\n<p>The documents.<\/p>\n<p>The divorce.<\/p>\n<p>The hospital.<\/p>\n<p>All of it was part of my history.<\/p>\n<p>But none of it controlled my future.<\/p>\n<p>I turned off the lights.<\/p>\n<p>Before
