hear.

“What?”

“I burned it.”

Olivia’s head snapped up.

Rebecca stopped breathing for a second.

Derek gripped the phone.

“You burned Dad’s papers?”

“They were lies.”

“When?”

“After.”

“After what?”

“After he died.”

Derek closed his eyes.

“Why?”

“Because he was dead and Martin had poisoned everything.”

“What was in them?”

“Copies.”

“Of what?”

“Accounts.”

“What did.”

“Your father was angry.”

“Enough to hide a box from you.”

Marjorie’s voice vanished.

Derek knew he had surprised her.

“You don’t know about that,” she said.

“Yes, I do.”

“No.”

“Box 117.”

Marjorie made a sound.

Small.

Almost a gasp.

Then the line went dead.

Harris immediately began issuing instructions.

Officers were sent toward Marjorie’s house.

The successor bank was alerted.

Security around Box 117 was increased.

Derek stared at the disconnected call.

“What was that?”

Rebecca answered.

“Fear.”

Olivia looked toward him.

“Your mother knew the box number.”

Derek nodded slowly.

“And whatever is inside it,” Harris said, “she did not want you finding it.”

The next morning, under bank supervision and with police present, Derek inserted an old key recovered from Thomas’s trust archive into Box 117.

The lock turned.

He pulled the long metal container onto a private viewing table.

Olivia stood several feet away.

Rebecca and Harris remained near the door.

Derek lifted the lid.

Inside were three folders.

A cassette tape.

A handwritten ledger.

And a sealed white envelope.

Across the envelope, Thomas Hale had written:

FOR DEREK — AND FOR MARTIN BENNETT’S DAUGHTER, IF SHE EVER NEEDS THE TRUTH.

Olivia stopped
