Last week, my son came home from school different.<\/p>\n

There was a spark in him. Not loud or restless. Just\u2026 glowing.<\/p>\n

Then Leo\u2019s teacher, Mr. Dunn, approached us, his expression tight.<\/p>\n

\u201cSarah, your son broke protocol by taking a different route. It was dangerous! We had clear instructions. Students who couldn\u2019t complete the trail were to remain at the campsite!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI understand, and I\u2019m so sorry,\u201d I replied quickly, even as my hands began to shake.<\/p>\n

But beneath that, something else rose. Pride.<\/p>\n

The door opened again, and Leo stepped inside.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry! I won\u2019t ever disobey orders like that again. I promise! Mom! Please don\u2019t let them take me away. I just wanted my best friend to be included in normal things!\u201d<\/p>\n

Tears streamed down his face.<\/p>\n

I blinked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?!\u201d Dunn protested, but no one paid him any attention.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s someone else here who wants to speak with you,\u201d Carlson added.<\/p>\n

Before I could respond, the other officer opened the door again.<\/p>\n

Leo stood still beside me.<\/p>\n

Sally continued, looking directly at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cSam said he offered to stay behind. But you didn\u2019t let him. You told him, \u2018As long as we are friends, I\u2019ll never leave you behind.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I picked him up yesterday, he was different. The last time I saw him like that was six years ago, before his father died in combat. He couldn\u2019t stop talking about the trees, the birds, the view from the top\u2026 things he had never experienced before. He said it felt like the world finally opened up to him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sally smiled through her tears. Harris did too.<\/p>\n

Leo gave a small smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know,\u201d Sally replied.<\/p>\n

The second officer, who introduced himself as Captain Reynolds, added, \u201cWhat mattered wasn\u2019t just that you carried him. It\u2019s that when it became truly difficult, you made a choice. You stayed.\u201d<\/p>\n

He paused, letting that sink in.<\/p>\n

Sally wiped her eyes, and so did I.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I heard everything,\u201d she said, \u201cit reminded me so much of Mark. The way he never let Sam feel left out. The way he showed up for him, no matter how hard things got.\u201d<\/p>\n

She explained that she had contacted Mark\u2019s former colleagues because she knew what Leo had done mattered\u2014not just to Sam, but to her as well.<\/p>\n

Reynolds stepped forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe talked about what Leo did last night, and we agreed on something. We wanted to recognize what you did for our late general\u2019s son.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leo looked up, cautious now, but no longer afraid.<\/p>\n

Carlson held out a small box.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve set up a scholarship fund in your name. It\u2019ll be there when you\u2019re ready. Any college you choose.\u201d<\/strong><\/h1>\n

For a moment, I thought I had misheard.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n

Leo just stared.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have to decide anything now,\u201d Reynolds added. \u201cBut we want you to know\u2014it\u2019s there because of your bravery.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dunn stood there, stunned.<\/p>\n

Leo looked at me, completely overwhelmed.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom\u2026?\u201d<\/p>\n

I shook my head, equally overwhelmed. \u201cI\u2026 I don\u2019t even know what to say.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have to say anything,\u201d Reynolds said. \u201cJust understand this\u2014what your son did wasn\u2019t small.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he took something from his pocket\u2014a military patch\u2014and gently placed it on Leo\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou earned this,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I can tell you\u2014Sam\u2019s father would\u2019ve been proud of you.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was it.<\/p>\n

My eyes filled instantly.<\/p>\n

I pulled Leo close, my voice breaking.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour dad would\u2019ve been proud too,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n

Leo\u2019s face tightened, and he nodded once.<\/p>\n
