I heard you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Mason\u2019s hand slipped out of mine.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped the recording.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since we had boarded, I wished I could make both of us invisible.<\/p>\n<p>The cabin suddenly felt too warm, too narrow, too public.<\/p>\n<p>I could hear a wrapper crinkling somewhere behind me and the soft rush of air through the vents, ordinary sounds continuing around something that had just split my life open.<\/p>\n<p>Mason stared at the seatback in front of him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Dad know we were here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did he say that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know everything yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the truth, and it was the only answer I trusted myself to give him.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler ended the announcement a few seconds later with something about enjoying the flight, and his voice shifted back into its familiar professional rhythm as if he hadn\u2019t just told a cabin full of strangers that there was another woman in his life.<\/p>\n<p>Then the plane started moving.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t confront him.<\/p>\n<p>Not there.<\/p>\n<p>Not then.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever I felt about Tyler, he was about to fly an aircraft full of people, and Mason was sitting next to me trying to understand why his mother had stopped smiling.<\/p>\n<p>So I buckled my seat belt.<\/p>\n<p>I put my phone away.<\/p>\n<p>I opened Mason\u2019s gummy bears because his hands were suddenly too stiff to do it himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you mad at Dad?\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m upset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of Claire?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at the little bag in his lap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes he like her more than us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That one almost broke me.<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward him and kept my voice as steady as I could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever is happening between Dad and me has nothing to do with how important you are. None of this is because of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded, but children can tell when adults are building a wall around information they aren\u2019t ready to give them.<\/p>\n<p>He put on his headphones without turning them on.<\/p>\n<p>The plane lifted.<\/p>\n<p>For the next hour, I barely registered the flight.<\/p>\n<p>The phone in my bag felt heavier than it had any right to feel because I knew exactly what was saved on it: Tyler\u2019s own voice, recorded while I had been trying to capture a sweet memory for our son.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t need to search his messages.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t need to guess what I had heard.<\/p>\n<p>I had heard him myself.<\/p>\n<p>Still, my mind kept trying to build innocent explanations because that is what the brain does when the truth arrives faster than your life can absorb it.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Claire was an old friend going through something terrible.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Tyler had worded everything badly.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe \u201cdone hiding\u201d meant something completely different.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe I was about to feel stupid for assuming the worst.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered one sentence.<\/p>\n<p>You asked me to choose what I really want.<\/p>\n<p>There wasn\u2019t much room inside that sentence for innocence.<\/p>\n<p>Mason eventually fell asleep against my arm.<\/p>\n<p>His drawing was sticking out of the front pocket of his small backpack, and I could see the giant crooked letters across the top.<\/p>\n<p>BEST PILOT EVER.<\/p>\n<p>I turned the backpack slightly so I couldn\u2019t see them anymore.<\/p>\n<p>When we landed, Mason woke immediately.<\/p>\n<p>For a second he forgot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did it,\u201d he said, grinning as the wheels rolled across the runway. \u201cDad flew us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked at me, and the grin disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre we still surprising him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had no idea how to answer that either.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to see him,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Passengers began standing as soon as they could, reaching into overhead bins and checking their phones while the aisle filled with coats, backpacks, and rolling bags.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>His voice was still coming through the overhead speakers when I finally understood who the announcement was really for, and I eased myself back into my seat.
