She doesn\u2019t know what she\u2019s saying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dispatcher heard him.<\/p>\n<p>She told me to keep talking to Chloe, keep the door locked, and tell her immediately if Julian got inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian,\u201d I said through the door, \u201cwhy was she restrained inside that casket?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy was there a key hidden under the lining?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His next answer came too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what you\u2019re talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That frightened me more than shouting would have.<\/p>\n<p>Because I still had the key.<\/p>\n<p>It was clenched inside my fist so tightly that its little metal teeth had pressed red lines into my palm.<\/p>\n<p>Julian could deny my words, but he could not make that key disappear.<\/p>\n<p>Upstairs, another door opened.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria called his name.<\/p>\n<p>Her footsteps came down more slowly than his had, and when she reached the hallway, I heard her ask what was happening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother called an ambulance,\u201d Julian said.<\/p>\n<p>He made it sound like an accusation.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria did not ask why.<\/p>\n<p>She said, \u201cOh, God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was all.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe heard her mother\u2019s voice and began shaking harder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t give me back,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was the only promise I made that night before I knew whether I had the power to keep it.<\/p>\n<p>Julian tried a softer voice next.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, you\u2019re upsetting her. Open the door and let Victoria take Chloe. We can explain everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe made a tiny sound against my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One word.<\/p>\n<p>Barely audible.<\/p>\n<p>But I heard it.<\/p>\n<p>So did the dispatcher through the telephone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe stays with me,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Julian\u2019s tone changed again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not her parent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was right about one thing.<\/p>\n<p>I wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>I was his mother.<\/p>\n<p>For most of his life, that had meant believing there was a decent explanation when he made a mistake, giving him time to speak when he was angry, and remembering the boy he had once been instead of judging every bad moment as the whole of him.<\/p>\n<p>But there are moments when love stops meaning protection from consequences.<\/p>\n<p>This was one of them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019m the person standing between her and that door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A siren became audible somewhere beyond the house.<\/p>\n<p>Julian stopped talking.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria did not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to clean this up before they come inside,\u201d she hissed.<\/p>\n<p>She must have thought I couldn\u2019t hear her through the door.<\/p>\n<p>I could.<\/p>\n<p>So could the dispatcher.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The laundry-room handle shifted under Julian\u2019s grip, once, then again, while I held Chloe against me and listened to the dispatcher tell me not to unlock the door.
