Dad looked back at the page as if a different sentence might appear if he read it twice.<\/p>\n

Grandma had documented the antique cello when she gave it to Lucy.<\/p>\n

It was dated before the cello left Grandma\u2019s music room.<\/p>\n

And Lucy was named as the recipient.<\/p>\n

Mom shook her head quickly. \u201cMargaret, she\u2019s a child.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andrew interrupted him gently.<\/p>\n

He tapped the page once.<\/p>\n

Dad stopped.<\/p>\n

Andrew explained that Grandma had not merely told the family she wanted Lucy to have the instrument someday.<\/p>\n

She had transferred it to her.<\/p>\n

The distinction mattered.<\/p>\n

A lot.<\/p>\n

Grandma looked directly at my father.<\/p>\n

Then she finally finished the sentence that had been hanging over our family for six weeks.<\/p>\n

Dad went still.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were told that?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

Lucy glanced at me before nodding.<\/p>\n

Mom rushed in.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe never said that exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned toward her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou told me I was not allowed to tell Grandma.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was because she gets upset.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grandma\u2019s eyebrows lifted.<\/p>\n

\u201cI appear to be surviving.\u201d<\/p>\n

A couple of relatives looked down.<\/p>\n

Rachel muttered, \u201cThis is getting ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grandma heard her.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs the pool ridiculous?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

Rachel blinked.<\/p>\n

Dad handed the page back toward Andrew, but Andrew did not take it immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s another issue,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Dad stared at him.<\/p>\n

Of course there was.<\/p>\n

Andrew asked Dad if he remembered signing paperwork for the collector.<\/p>\n

Dad said he remembered paperwork but not every line.<\/p>\n

Andrew nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s fair. I\u2019m not asking you to remember every line.\u201d<\/p>\n

He opened the folder again.<\/p>\n

This time he removed a copy of the seller\u2019s document Dad had signed when the cello changed hands.<\/p>\n

I could not read it from where I stood.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t need to.<\/p>\n

Dad recognized it immediately.<\/p>\n

His shoulders changed.<\/p>\n
